Product Introduction

Furfural, chemically named 2-Furfuraldehyde (CAS No. 98-01-1, EINECS No. 202-627-7, HS Code 29321200), is an organic compound with the molecular formula C5H4O2 and a molecular weight of 96.08. It appears as a colorless, transparent oily liquid when freshly distilled. The liquid gradually turns dark brown upon contact with air and emits a characteristic benzaldehyde-like odor.

Furfural has a melting point of -36℃, a boiling point of 162℃, and a density of 1.16g/mL at 25℃. It is slightly soluble in cold water, but soluble in hot water, ethanol, ether, benzene and other common organic solvents. This compound features high chemical reactivity. It can undergo oxidation, reduction, condensation, substitution and ring-opening addition reactions under specific conditions. It is widely used as a key intermediate in chemical synthesis. Furfural is primarily derived from the hydrolysis and dehydration of pentosan in plant fiber raw materials, such as corncobs and bagasse. It can also be produced via artificial synthesis.

Key Applications

1. Chemical Synthesis Intermediate

o Serves as a core raw material for producing furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfural, furoic acid and other derivatives.

o Used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes and fragrances.

2. Solvent in Industrial Processes

o Acts as an excellent solvent for refining lubricating oils, extracting aromatic hydrocarbons and purifying resins.

o Applied in the production of adhesives and coatings to enhance product performance.

3. Resin Manufacturing

o Reacts with phenol to produce furfural-phenol resin, which is widely used in the production of abrasives, foundry binders and heat-resistant materials.

o Used in the synthesis of furan resin for high-performance composite materials.

4. Agricultural & Pharmaceutical Fields

o Serves as an intermediate for manufacturing pesticides, including insecticides and fungicides.

o Used in the production of certain drugs, such as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory medications.

5. Other Applications

o Applied in the food industry as a flavoring agent with a unique aroma.

o Used in the production of fuel additives to improve the octane number of gasoline.
